SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Under the supervision of the Parks, Recreation & Cemeteries Director, the Recreation Specialist is responsible for planning, implementing, evaluating and supervising a comprehensive year-round athletic program including adult and youth sporting activities and special events. This position develops engaging opportunities for participants of all ages; while scheduling and monitoring athletic activities and supervising volunteers, umpires, scorekeepers, and referees.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design, organize, and implement a full range of year-round athletic programming within the Township, including youth and adult programs.
- Administer day-to-day athletic programming activities; coordinate program scheduling and reservations for teams, participants, volunteers, umpires, scorekeepers, and officials.
- Monitor programs and activities in progress, including program participation; collect feedback and recommend improvements to ensure smooth operation and participant satisfaction.
- Ensure compliance with department policies, safety standards, and risk management practices.
- Assist with the required pre-screening process for volunteers, instructors, referees, and program-related officials; ensure volunteers have completed the required paperwork prior to participating.
- Participate in the development of marketing materials and assist with promoting programs.
- Maintain accurate records, registrations, attendance reports, and program evaluations.
- Assist supervisor as directed; assist in planning and organizing special events; assist Director in budget preparation by providing data and similar information as requested for assigned programs.
- Assist with township-wide events, festivals, and special projects as assigned.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with participants, community groups, schools, and local organizations.
- Respond to public inquiries (by phone, email, or in-person) and provide excellent customer service; may issue permits, receipt of fees, etc. Provide information on the department's operations, events, and programs.
- Work schedule may occasionally require flexibility; including evenings and weekends, to meet program and activity demands.
- Support the overall mission and goals of the Parks, Recreation, and Cemeteries Department.
- Perform other related duties and assignments as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree in Parks & Recreation Administration, Sports Management or a related field; an equivalent of education and experience may be substituted.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum one year experience in parks and recreation programming, event coordination, community engagement, or related field is preferred.
LICENSES:
Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan driver’s license. CPR, AED, and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain within six months of hire is required.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Requires proficiency in Microsoft Office and recreation management software for scheduling and supervising athletic activities and interacting with players, participants, and the general public. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to supervise and motivate volunteers. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
OTHER:
Must be able to speak, read, and write the English language. Strong problem-solving and customer service skills. Skill in organizing multiple programs and events simultaneously, setting priorities, meeting deadlines, and communicating effectively with co-workers, subordinates, supervisors, the general public, and others sufficiently to exchange or convey information. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, and ability to exercise independent judgment, as needed.

Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; requires stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. The employee may be required to sit for long periods of time (6-8 hours per day). The employee may be required to sit at a computer station and type for extended periods of time (4-6 hours). While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, listen, stand, and walk; may occasionally be required to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move a minimum of (50) pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed primarily in an office and field environment, in all weather conditions, including but not limited to heat, humidity, cold, rain, and snow. Fieldwork is performed year-round and requires long periods of standing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
The noise level is usually quiet in office settings and loud at outdoor settings.
