DESCRIPTION:
The Village of Glen Ellyn is seeking a motivated and community-oriented full-time Fire Marshal with strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. The Fire Marshal serves as the Village’s lead authority on fire prevention, life safety and community risk reduction, overseeing fire prevention programs, conducting inspections, enforcing applicable fire and life-safety codes and promoting public safety through education and outreach.
The successful candidate will possess excellent customer service and interpersonal skills and be comfortable working collaboratively with residents, business owners, contractors, developers, the Volunteer Fire Company, regulatory agencies and other Village staff. The ideal candidate will be a visible community leader who can effectively balance education, compliance and enforcement while maintaining a strong commitment to serving the residents and businesses of Glen Ellyn.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Administering and managing the Village’s fire prevention, life safety and community risk reduction programs to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local codes and regulations.
- Supervising, training, mentoring and evaluating the Fire and Property Inspector, while fostering professional development and maintaining high standards of customer service and code enforcement.
- Conducting and overseeing inspections of commercial, multi-family residential, institutional and other occupancies to ensure compliance with fire, life-safety, property maintenance and related codes.
- Inspecting construction sites, new developments, renovations and existing buildings for compliance with approved plans, fire codes and life-safety requirements.
- Reviewing and assisting with plan reviews for commercial developments, fire alarm systems, fire suppression systems and other fire protection features.
- Investigating fire code violations and hazardous conditions; preparing notices of violations, citations and enforcement documentation; and working collaboratively with property owners and businesses to achieve compliance.
- Serving as a visible community leader and advocate for fire and life safety
- Responding to fire prevention, life-safety, hazardous conditions and code enforcement concerns, including serving in an on-call capacity to evaluate incidents and determine appropriate response actions.
- Coordinating with the Volunteer Fire Company, Village departments, public agencies and regulatory partners on fire prevention, emergency response and life-safety matters.
- Maintaining accurate inspection, permit, violation, investigation and fire protection system records utilizing departmental software, including ImageTrend and LAMA.
- Responding to citizen complaints, service requests and inquiries in a professional, responsive and customer-focused manner.
- Keeping current with changes in fire codes, construction practices, fire protection systems and community risk reduction strategies.
Requirements
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Associate’s degree required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years experience in fire prevention and fire protection in a building or fire department.
- Certification as Fire Prevention Officer I, through the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal required within one year of hire. Fire Prevention Officer II preferred and required within two (2) years of hire.
- General knowledge of building construction, permit processes, fire protection systems and applicable fire, building and property maintenance codes.
- Experience interpreting plans, blueprints and construction documents.
- Strong leadership, communication, conflict-resolution and customer service skills.
- Ability to independently manage multiple priorities, projects, inspections and enforcement activities.
- Valid Illinois driver’s license.
SALARY/BENEFITS:
This is a full-time, non-exempt position with full benefits and participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), a defined benefit retirement plan. Our comprehensive benefits package also includes health, dental, and vision insurance, life/AD&D coverage, flexible spending, transit, a 457 deferred compensation plan, paid time off, a wellness incentive program, and tuition reimbursement. The current salary range for this position is $74,250 to $104,328 (Grade K). Anticipated starting salary is +/- $80,000. Actual starting salary is negotiable, and will be dependent upon qualifications, experience, and professional achievement.
