As the Division Director of Thoracic Surgery, you will lead your surgical program to be aligned with our Vision 2030 goals to improve patient outcomes, expand minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgery capabilities, drive research and education through our partnership with Temple University, and foster multidisciplinary collaboration in lung cancer, esophageal disease, and complex thoracic conditions in partnership with The Cleveland Clinic.
The Thoracic Surgery Division Director will be provided 0.1 FTE (10% protected administrative time) dedicated to leadership, administration, oversight, strategic planning, quality initiatives, physician development, and continuous improvement of the Division of Thoracic Surgery.
The Division Director must:
- Hold a current, unrestricted license to practice medicine.
- Be board-certified in Thoracic Surgery (or Thoracic Surgery integrated certification) by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery or an appropriate Osteopathic specialty board.
- Demonstrate a record of clinical excellence and leadership within a thoracic surgery or cardiothoracic surgical practice, department, or healthcare organization.
- Possess strong administrative, operational, and interpersonal skills necessary to lead a high-acuity surgical division.
- Demonstrate a commitment to quality improvement, patient safety, physician engagement, and organizational performance.
- Maintain active engagement in clinical practice and professional development within the specialty of Thoracic Surgery.
- Foster collaboration across surgical subspecialties, oncology, pulmonology, radiation oncology, hospital leadership, and multidisciplinary care teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide overall leadership and strategic direction for the Division of Thoracic Surgery.
- Promote excellence in patient care, quality outcomes, patient safety, and operational performance in thoracic oncology and benign thoracic disease.
- Support recruitment, retention, mentorship, and professional development of thoracic surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons, general surgeons with a thoracic interest, and advanced practice providers.
- Collaborate with hospital and physician leadership to develop and implement divisional goals aligned with organizational priorities.
- Lead quality improvement initiatives and monitor clinical performance metrics across the division.
- Advance minimally invasive, robotic-assisted, and video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS/RATS) programs, including complex lung and esophageal surgery.
- Facilitate collaboration among thoracic surgeons and multidisciplinary cancer care teams to enhance care coordination and patient access.
- Support growth initiatives, lung cancer program development, esophageal center of excellence initiatives, and service line expansion opportunities.
- Participate in strategic planning, resource allocation, and operational decision-making for the division.
- Foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Serve as a representative of the Division of Thoracic Surgery within the organization and the broader medical community.
