Company History
Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County: A Quick History
The Health & Hospital Corporation (HHC) has been serving central Indiana for more than 165 years. Its story began in 1859 with Indianapolis City Hospital, which cared for patients during smallpox outbreaks and later treated more than 13,000 Union soldiers during the Civil War.
In 1951, Indiana created HHC, bringing the county’s public hospital and public health department under one organization. That made HHC one of the few systems in the country focused on both preventing illness and treating it.
Over the years, HHC continued to grow. Wishard Hospital became today’s Eskenazi Health, Indianapolis EMS was created under HHC in 2010, and the beautiful Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital opened in 2013. HHC also expanded into long-term care and now owns one of Indiana’s largest networks of skilled nursing facilities.
Today, HHC is unique because it brings together Eskenazi Health, the Marion County Public Health Department, Indianapolis EMS, and long-term care services under one mission: improving the health of our community while ensuring everyone has access to quality care.
